UTV Hunting Accessories
Utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), also referred to as side-by-sides, are exceedingly useful for both work and recreational riding purposes. But did you also know they make excellent hunting vehicles? You can take your whole crew of hunting buddies out on a camping trip with all your weapons at the ready and have your vehicle to use as an easy means of getting to your blinds.
However, your average UTV isn’t exactly equipped for hunting straight out of the gate, so you’ll need to add some accessories to it to make it more suitable for the task. Altus Motorsports in Oklahoma is proud to be your local UTV dealer. Here are some of our suggestions for accessories you can add to your utility vehicle to make hunting easier!
Gun Scabbard or Rack
Also known as a “gun boot,” a scabbard holds your rifles safely and securely as you drive your utility vehicle around. This keeps you from having to try to drive with your weapon clumsily slung over your shoulder or carelessly resting on an empty seat or on the floor. You don’t want your weapon to be damaged while you’re driving! Having your weapon mounted to a scabbard also keeps the sighting in place and protects the optic. Always store your rifles unloaded on the scabbard.
You can also use a gun rack or even a bow rack if you hunt with bows and arrows instead. This gives you faster access to your weapon. You’ll want a cushioned model to protect your weapons and check to see that the locks are strong enough to hold everything in place while the utility vehicle is in motion.
LED Lights
Hunting often takes place early in the morning when the sun may not be high enough to fully illuminate your path. It also might be cloudy or misty where you are. A set of LED lights on your side-by-side ensures you’ll always be able to see as you’re driving to and from your blind. You can also use your headlights to find your way back to your truck or camping spot when it gets dark. A spotlight can help you find your game if it’s getting dark, too; just don’t use it to try to hunt after nightfall, as this is both illegal and extremely dangerous.
Winch & Tow Straps
You never know when a winch and some tow straps will come in handy! Big game hunters may need to use a winch in order to pull a catch out of a ditch or muddy area in order to dress it on dry land. And you can also use it to haul fallen trees out of your way. Tow straps can help you to pull a friend’s side-by-side out of the muck if they become mired.
Camouflage Cover
It goes without saying that your uncovered UTV alone is going to scare away the game, so once you’ve parked it out of the way, you’ll also want to cover it with a camouflage cover that blends in with your surroundings. This cover should be waterproofed and durable enough to protect your side-by-side from falling debris, weather and UV damage.
While this list of UTV hunting accessories is by no means exhaustive, it’s a great start!
