How to get Into Motocross
It doesn’t get any better than the exciting world of motocross racing for off-roaders who like a little adrenaline in their fuel tanks! The best riders in the world all started somewhere, and if you want to join them one day you’d better get to work. The good news is that getting started is easier than you think, and there are plenty of experienced riders who will be happy to show you the ropes. That includes our team at Altus Motorsports in Altus, Oklahoma. We also serve motocross enthusiasts in Amarillo, Texas.
Safety First
Before you make the leap to dirt biking or motocross competition, be sure to put in plenty of miles on your BMX or mountain bike. There are plenty of great mountain biking trails to explore, and they offer a lot of experience that transfers well to riding an off-road motorcycle. They’re also a lot of fun to ride when you don’t have time to get to the track!
When it comes to buying a motocross bike, you can find some amazing deals on second-hand bikes online. Manufacturers also aggressively price bikes to sell near the end of each model year. Just be sure to inspect any pre-owned bike for excess wear and tear. There’s nothing wrong with starting out with a powerful bike, but know your limitations if you’re not an experienced rider. Be sure to also invest in quality safety gear including a helmet, boots and goggles.
Train With Experienced Riders
Find your nearest motocross track as soon as possible and get accustomed to the way your new bike handles. This is also a great place to meet other riders and learn about local clubs and competitive events. If you can find a quality motocross riding school in your area, it can be money well-spent. Training with world-class competitive riders can help you progress much more quickly than learning on your own.
Practice Makes Perfect
It should come as no surprise that the world’s best motocross racers spend a lot of time practicing. In addition to racing a full competition schedule, most of them train constantly. They know that the second they start making excuses, there’s always someone in their rear view mirror ready to leave them in their dust.
You should ride your motocross bike as frequently as you can under as many different road and weather conditions as possible. You need the ability to make split second decisions in competition, and that starts with knowing how your bike handles. Make sure to also eat right and exercise!
